Diastasis Recti

What is it?

Diastasis Recti is the thinning of the tissue, the linea alba, between the right and left rectus abdominis, causing them to separate. It occurs most commonly in pregnancy because of the inevitable pressure placed on the linea alba, in turn weakening it and creating space between the muscles. A small amount of widening is normal in pregnancy, however, about two thirds of pregnant women have too much widening, especially if the woman is over 35, carrying multiples, lacks muscle tone or if pregnancies are close together. Meal planning and preparation is a HUGE part of successful healthy nutrition. I really can’t emphasize this enough; I would even go so far as to say that it is vital. ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.’ Yes, I know that is an overused, cliche saying, but it is oh so true in this case!
